The team's concept sheet for the Leshy wooden idol, from four pencil stages to the finished carved totem

The Leshy idol, guardian and trickster of the forest

Every forest in the old Russian villages had a master, and you did not walk into his trees without thinking about him first. They called him the leshy, from les, the forest. In Forgotten Eras he is a pillar of carved wood standing in the grass, horned and hooded, with a long beard running down the grain.

The master of the forest

The leshy of folk belief changes size as he likes. Among the grass he is no taller than a blade, and among the pines he is as tall as the pines. He herds wolves and hares from one forest to the next, and he likes nothing better than to lead a traveller in circles until night falls on a path that should have taken an hour. People heard him whistle, hoot and laugh in the trees. If you got lost, the cure was to turn your clothes inside out and put your left shoe on your right foot, which confused him enough to let you go.

Herdsmen made bargains with him. A leshy who was given his due kept the cattle safe all summer. Alexander Afanasyev gathered much of this lore in "The Poetic Views of the Slavs on Nature", written in the 1860s.

Why an idol and not a boss

For a long time the Leshy was planned as a boss. In September we told our community on Steam that he keeps his powers but meets Ivan only as a helpful totem, and that is where he stands today. The idol is a tribute and a warning at the same time. Approach it with respect, and the forest can become a sanctuary. Approach it badly, and it becomes a labyrinth.

In play the totem changes the ground around it. Depending on the choices you made earlier, it may open a hidden path, grant a burst of speed through the woods, or catch you in roots that pull you under the earth. No two meetings go the same way, which is how the leshy behaves in the tales: a guardian one day and a trickster the next.

The Leshy idol's 3D design sheet: the bare pillar, the sculpt taking shape, and the finished wooden totem

From a plain column to the finished idol: the 3D stages of the Leshy totem.

From pencil to carved wood

The idol started as a pencil drawing on a tree stump, and the first three stages are all about the wood. Bark twists around the body like a cloak, leaves gather at the shoulders, and the horns stay the same from the first line to the last. By stage four the stump has gone and the figure stands on a carved base of Slavic patterns, and the sculpt follows that drawing closely. The finish is painted by hand: rough bark, moss, faint glowing runes and branches that grow out of the head like antlers, so the idol reads as part of the forest it guards.

Ivan's world has more of these carved figures. The Vodyanoy idol marks the cursed waters, and the Grey Wolf idol is where a tired traveller gets his strength back.
