The team's concept sheet for the Domovoy with his broom, lantern and Kolobok, from sketch to final colour

The Domovoy, the guardian nobody thanked

Ask someone who grew up with a Russian grandmother about the domovoy and you will probably get a story. A saucer of milk left out at night. A horse found in the morning with its mane braided into knots. Knocking on the stove when the house was empty. A family that moved and carried him to the new place in an old bast shoe.

The spirit behind the stove

The domovoy, often just called "grandfather" or "the master", is the spirit of the house in East Slavic belief, usually a small, hairy old man who lives behind the stove or under it. A family that fed him, with bread, salt or a little milk, had a quiet house and healthy animals. A family that forgot him heard knocking at night, found the crockery broken and the horses' manes tangled, and sometimes woke up with him sitting on their chest. When they moved, they took him along, in embers from the old stove or in an old bast shoe, and asked him to come and live in the new house.

Alexander Afanasyev wrote about him in "The Poetic Views of the Slavs on Nature" (1865 to 1869), and the ethnographers who came after him found a different domovoy in almost every region: a protector in one village, a prankster in the next.

Ours

He is a guardian nobody thanked. Forget him and he turns, first to mischief, then to worse. In Forgotten Eras the Domovoy has been corrupted by strange magic, and it is up to Ivan to break that corruption.

He guards a ruined cemetery now, with a broom and a lantern, and he is the first boss of the game. The Forgotten Eras demo ends with him.

Twenty countries tell the Domovoy twenty different ways, so when I wrote ours, I gave him fifty shades of grumpiness.

Before the fight

This is how he greets Ivan in the demo:

"Turn back, stranger. This place is sealed. It must remain sealed."

And when it is clear Ivan will not turn back:

"No one helps. No one remembers. Only silence remains. And I... I am the silence's teeth."

The fight

We built the fight out of what a house spirit would have to hand. He swings the broom, throws the lantern, charges with his shoulder and slams the ground with his whole weight, and he can shield himself with runic fire.

The broom and the lantern are ours, and so is the cemetery: no tale ever put a domovoy among the graves. That is where our story found him.

Folk belief says a domovoy who is fed and remembered keeps the house safe. Ivan remembers this one: he played with the Domovoy as a child, and he says so. His answer to the threat is the line the whole fight hangs on.

"Then I'll fight not to destroy you... but to remind you."
